The Joint Commission Goal 15,
Suicide Risk Assessment, was to be implemented in January 2007. Facilities still
struggle with the process and procedures regarding this standard. Psychiatric
and acute care hospitals must deal with the challenges of the psychiatric
patient and the risk of suicide in their setting. Behavioral health
professionals generally utilize adequate screening and assessment tools, and
have multiple precautions/processes in place for these patients. But meeting the
needs of actual or potential suicidal patients in an acute care environment can
be daunting. This webinar is focused on assisting non-psychiatric hospital
settings deal with these challenges. Discussion with include: statistics
related to suicide/suicidality, the Joint Commission’s Goal 15, setting up
systems to meet the needs of the suicidal patients, and guidance on how to
perform a suicide screen on vulnerable behavioral health patients.
Objectives:
- Understand suicidality and risk
factors for screening.
- Understand organizational
processes that can improve suicide screening/assessment in non-psychiatric acute
care setting.
- Identify strategies for ensuring
the safety of the patient with actual or potential suicide ideation.
- Describe questions that
non-psychiatric nurses can to ask patients to screen for suicidality.
