Webinar Summary:
Restraint and seclusion are safety interventions considered to be the “last resort” in maintaining the safety of patients and staff. The potential legal risks of these interventions are high and it is imperative that we work to decrease the frequency in which these techniques are implemented.
While “restraint/seclusion free” environments may seem like an unrealistic goal, organizations can fine tune the use of debriefing and data to aid in their reduction efforts. Debriefing with the staff and the patient after a restraint/seclusion is often viewed as an “exercise” that staff either don’t have time for, or have little understanding of it’s importance in event prevention. The use of facility generated data can assist in reduction efforts through the development or improvement of policies and procedures.
The goal of this presentation is to assist organizational leaders and managers in understanding the importance of an effective debriefing process and the transparent use restraint and seclusion data as an aid in minimizing the intervention of “last resort”.
