rL Solutions in partnership with Joe Cappiello, President and CEO of Simulation Education Services, will be hosting a Webinar entitled “ Hospital Emergency Management – Evolving Standards and Strategies” . Registration for this Webinar will be open until 5:00pm EST on Tuesday October 21st, 2008.
Webinar Summary:
Hurricane Gustav caused the greatest staged medical evacuation in US history. Thousands of acute and long term care patients were evacuated from the city of New Orleans in anticipation of the storm and with the memory of Hurricane Katrina still lingering. Most hospitals chose to keep their most critical patients and shelter in place due to the fragility and risk to those patients. How did they come to make these decisions and what did they base those decisions on?
This webinar will focus on the factors that compel healthcare organizations to engage in disaster preparedness and outline effective strategies for meeting those demands. The concept of introducing resiliency into the preparedness cycle will be discussed and why organizations should move away from the notion of being “ prepared” to the reality of embedding resiliency into their planning and response efforts. In 2008, the Joint Commission introduced significant changes to its standards regarding Emergency Management that will become effective in rendering accreditation decisions in 2009. This webinar will review key elements of those standards as well as the philosophy behind those changes.
Mr. Joe Cappiello, President and CEO of Simulation Education Services, served for ten years as the VP for Accreditation Field Operations at The Joint Commission and was instrumental in the development of these new standards. During his tenure at the Joint Commission, Mr. Cappiello led teams that debriefed nearly 300 organizations post-disaster and is considered a leading authority on building resiliency in healthcare organizations.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify the major factors influencing organizational preparedness
2. Define resiliency as it applies to healthcare
3. List the six critical components that the Joint Commission required in your Emergency Operations Plan
4. Identify four benefits of properly conducted exercises
5. List the five strategies of meeting the “ 96-hour” rule
